Prague, Czech Republic is quickly becoming one of the most popular cities in Europe…So is it worth the trip? Known for its Old World charm, winding streets, hearty local cuisine and stunning architecture, Prague attracts millions of tourists each year seeking to discover this stunning city. I grew up visiting Prague and always loved it, but since moving here in 2020, it’s become a passion of mine to share my love for this city. Even though a growing number of tourists visit each year, Prague still has so much to offer. I’m here to help you best understand how to visit, what to skip, and how to find the right Prague trip for you. Let’s go!

Why Do People Ask: “Is Prague Worth Visiting?”

A beautiful view of Prague, one of the most stunning cities worth visiting in Europe.

Prague, Czech Republic is known for its old-world charm, historic sights (including the world’s largest castle complex!), charming architecture and romantic ambiance. Each year, millions of tourists come to Prague alone to experience the city’s beautiful winding roads, taste the best beer in the world and experience the local culture. When you think of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Prague is certainly in the top five.

As an optimistic traveller, I find most places worth visiting for one reason or another. Prague, Czech Republic is absolutely worth the trip for travellers who appreciate excellent cuisine, a rich history, a variety of architecture and walkable cities. However, due to the high number of tourists, occasional scams and increasing costs, many people have begun to question whether it’s worth making the trip to Prague, Czech Republic.

Which brings me to my next point…

…Is Prague Overrated?

It’s no secret Prague has been suffering from overtourism, like many popular European capital cities. Over the summer months, and again over Christmas and New Year’s, the city faces an excess of crowds. Online, many creators tend to proclaim Prague is officially overrated. But is that true? As a Prague local and travel influencer who has visited well over 40 countries, I still believe Prague has so much to offer for tourists and is absolutely not overrated.

A beautiful view of Prague, one of the most stunning cities worth visiting in Europe.

Prague is, of course, different from many capital cities around Europe – and that can be tough, sometimes, when people have expectations that might not be met. The country uses a different currency (the Czech crown, or Koruna), they have their own public transit system and culturally, they are often more similar to Eastern Europeans than the Mediterranean culture (and friendliness) many tourists expect. People can come off brash and rude, when in reality, they’re just not used to being friendly.

Of course, there are still scammy parts of the city I wish did not exist – more on that later! – but, overall, I believe the city is absolutely not overrated.

What Makes Prague Worth Visiting

Prague is known for its rich history, charming architecture, Old World charm and beautiful landscape. There are countless reasons to visit Prague, Czech Republic. Let’s dive in.

First and foremost, there are SO many things to do in Prague. From the world’s largest castle complex to the incredible astronomical clock to the John Lennon Wall and beyond, there are so many historic sights to see. Prague Castle alone will take half a day! Truly, there’s so much to do, it’s easy to fill a three-day itinerary with plenty to see and do!

A view of Prague castle from across the river, one of the best things to do in Prague during your Prague 3 day Itinerary.

And for those tourists who may not want to visit all the historical sights, there are countless more local activities to do as well. From film screenings in old barracks to underground bunkers to rooftop movies…You simply can’t get bored.

It’s also one of the most photogenic cities in Europe. Every corner is truly picture perfect.

The Prague Skyline with Charles Bridge, one of the best places to visit in Czech Republic during your 1 week Czech Republic itinerary.

The coffee and food scene in Prague has blossomed into one of the most up-and-coming scenes in Europe. You’ll find some of the best coffee here, but you’ll also find incredible pastries and food from around the world. From Georgian khachapuri to Vietnamese banh mi, you simply can’t go wrong. These are some of my favorite restaurants in Prague.

A Local’s Advice for Visiting Prague

If you’re visiting Prague, there are so many ways to experience Prague like a local. First and foremost, consider booking accommodation in one of the less-touristy parts of Prague, like Holesovice or Vinohrady. These trendy, up-and-coming neighborhoods offer a different experience to staying in the city center.

When planning your trip, consider booking spots at restaurants in advance – and book restaurants that are not near the city center. Of course, there are several great spots near the city center…but it’s not the norm. You’ll be much luckier eating somewhere further out.

Next, start your morning at a cafe or bakery. This is a great option for anyone looking to try local Czech pastries…and some incredible coffee. Prague has a huge specialty coffee culture, as well.

If you truly want to see Prague like a local, consider spending time doing what locals might do. That means a stroll through Stromovka, the city’s most beautiful green space, or a movie night at Kasarna Karlin. Even a stroll along the river (Naplavka can be touristy, but many locals visit too!) is a beautiful way to see the city.

What to Skip in Prague

If you’re visiting Prague, there are several touristy experiences I would recommend skipping as a local.

  • Beer Spas: I generally recommend people skip these unless they have a good reason as they tend to be touristy. If you’re looking for a spa experience, there are plenty that offer a much better experience, like the Infinit spa complex.
  • Absinthe Bars: Avoid, avoid, avoid! These bars are tourist traps to the maximum. If you want a lovely bar, there are plenty of options. Try Hemingway Bar or Alchemist Bar instead.
  • Foreign Exchange Currency Counters: Unfortunately, these counters have proven time and time again to be a classic tourist trap. Use an ATM or an app like Revolut or Wise instead.
  • Eating in the Center: Prague is full of incredible restaurants. Skip the ones in the city center and save yourself the effort. My Prague Google Maps has all my favorite spots, tried and tested.
  • Candy Stores: These candy stores are overpriced tourist traps. Head to a local grocery store instead!

How Expensive Is Prague?

A beautiful view of Prague, one of the most stunning cities worth visiting in Europe.

Prague has gotten increasingly expensive in recent years due to an influx of tourists and rising cost of living, among other factors. But the concept of something being “expensive” is subjective. So here’s how much things really cost in Prague, as of publishing:

  • Main meals at a sit-down restaurant close to the city center: 600 CZK approximately, or 25 Euros
  • Main meals at a sit-down restaurant in less touristy areas: 300 CZK approximately, or 12.50 Euros
  • A pint of beer: 70 CZK approximately, or 3 euros. This cost will vary a lot, depending on location.
  • A cup of coffee: 70 CZK approximately, or 3 euros. This cost will vary a lot, depending on location.

Aside from this, you can expect to spend 340 CZK (approx. 13.50 Euros) for a 3-day public transit pass in Prague, which covers all forms of public transit.

Attractions like Prague Castle, for example, run around 450 CZK (about 18 Euros) for adults. Some attractions will cost less, and others may be free (for example, I have a great free walking tour I always recommend here in this post).

A beautiful view of Prague, one of the most stunning cities worth visiting in Europe.

On average, mid-range hotels close to the city center will run around 3,600 CZK nightly, or 150 Euros a night – though you can absolutely get rooms for cheaper, especially if you stay further out or opt for less luxurious accommodations.

In my opinion, Prague is priced competitively with other capital cities in Europe, especially given the demand. If you’re smart, you can spend less than the average – but, due to demand, prices have gone up in recent years.

What’s the Food Like in Prague?

In my opinion, the Prague food scene is among the best in Europe. Prague is home to genuinely excellent restaurants across a variety of different cuisines, from top-notch vegan food to Georgian food to Vietnamese food to delicious burgers and, of course, Czech food. Truly, Prague has some of the best restaurants in the world.

Czech cuisine tends to feature heartier portions, with dumplings, sauces and roast meats at the center of the dishes. However, the cuisine also features lots of cabbage, cauliflower, root vegetables and pickled vegetables. Common meals will include duck, fruit-filled dumplings, and tartare, among others. If you’re curious, I go into depth on Czech food here and talk about where to test each dish.

Is Prague Good for Families?

Prague is an excellent place to visit for families! The city is known for its many green spaces and parks (including parks for children!), making it an awesome place to explore with kids. A lot of cafes in Prague also have kid’s corners and places for children to play. In addition, the public transit and safe, walkable vibes make it the perfect place to visit with kids.

Is Prague Good for Couples?

Prague is known for its romantic ambiance and cute, winding streets, making it an amazing stop for couples looking for a getaway. There are plenty of opportunities for romantic dinners (I have a list of my favorite spots here), beautiful walks and intentional time together.

Is Prague Good for Solo Travelers?

Prague is an excellent city for solo travellers! The city attracts a younger crowd as well as older crowds and can be a lively place to meet new people. It’s also an extremely safe place, making it a great option for female solo travellers.

If you’re visiting Prague as a solo traveller, be sure to pick a hostel – if you’re a woman, I love the Women’s Only Hostel Prague. Doing some group tours, like a walking tour or a food tour (this is my FAVORITE one here), can be a great way to meet people as well.

A Local’s Verdict: Is Prague Worth the Trip?

Prague is absolutely worth the trip! There is so much that makes this city so special: the architecture, the green spaces, the beautiful cafes, the walkable nature… When it all comes together, it makes a truly incredible city. If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend trying to get out of the main city center and see some of the more local neighborhoods, try the local cuisine and see Prague like a local. And, most importantly, don’t rush. There’s so much to do here, and you simply won’t be able to do it all in one trip. If you pace yourself, you’ll be much happier.

Thank you for the local’s advice on the many things to do outside of the main tourist areas. We shy away from overly touristic areas, though love exploring local neighborhoods, restaurants, green spaces, and more.
